The Marble Church (Marmorkirken) is located at the focal point of the entry to the part of Copenhagen that is called Frederiksstaden. The church is usually called the Marble Church, even though its real name is “Frederik's Church”. The church was started in the 18th century, to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Oldenburg-line in the Royal Danish House, and Frederik V laid the cornerstone of the church in 1749. For various reasons including the death of the original architect as well as the death of Frederik V, who financed the costly project, and his successor Christian VII wasn't as keen to continue the project. Thus the building of the church continued on reduced power until 1770, where it came to a complete halt.

More than 100 years should pass until the businessman C. F. Tietgen, bought the premises and the remains of the unfinished church in 1874. The church construction was resumed in 1877 and the church was opened on August 19, 1894 – 145 years after the laying of the cornerstone.
